Can You Prescribe Botox with Standard Qualifications in the UK?

    The short answer is no.

In the UK, botulinum toxin products (commonly referred to as Botox) are classified as Prescription-Only Medicines (POMs). This means you must be an authorised prescriber to legally prescribe them.

    Who Can Prescribe Botox?

You can prescribe Botox if you are:

    • A doctor registered with the GMC

    • A dentist prescribing within their professional scope

    • A Nurse Independent Prescriber (V300 qualification)

    • A Pharmacist Independent Prescriber

    • Certain supplementary prescribers operating within approved clinical management plans

What if I'm a Nurse, Beauty Therapist or Aesthetic Practitioner?

If you only hold a standard nursing qualification, beauty qualification, or aesthetics training certificate, you cannot prescribe Botox unless you have completed an independent prescribing qualification.

Many aesthetic practitioners work as non-prescribers. In these cases, a qualified prescriber must assess the patient and issue a prescription before treatment can proceed.

Can You Inject Botox Without Being a Prescriber?

    Potentially yes, but only when:

    • A qualified prescriber has assessed the patient,

    • A valid prescription has been issued for that specific patient, and

    • You have appropriate training, competence, and insurance.

    What About Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are different. Most dermal fillers are not prescription-only medicines, although fillers containing lidocaine have additional regulatory considerations. Therefore, prescribing rules for Botox do not automatically apply to dermal fillers.

    Important Changes to Prescribing Practice

Since 2025, nursing and midwifery prescribers have been required to carry out face-to-face consultations before prescribing prescription-only medicines for cosmetic procedures. Remote prescribing for patients not personally examined face-to-face is no longer permitted under NMC guidance.
